About the Photographer
A wild-eyed photographer who loves to watch birds, climb mountains and ride horses, I also serve as the Communications Director for Conservation Northwest, a non-profit organization working to protect and connect old-growth forests and other wild areas from the Washington Coast to the Canadian Rockies.
Working in the field of conservation for the last ten years has given me a deep appreciation for the power of images to protect our diminishing wildlands. I want to go beyond simply creating aesthetically pleasing compositions and create a collection of images that together with words, tell a story. My hope is to help people understand the power, beauty, and complexity in nature and why we must respect it.
For our own survival, we must ensure that large connected chunks of wildness remain to provide resiliency and stability in the very dynamic and unpredictable world we live in today. In this regard, I greatly admire Florian Schultz, a conservation photographer who has spent the last ten years photographing the Yellowstone to Yukon region.
I also owe deep gratitude to photographers Colin McNulty, James Johnston, and Brett Cole, who all helped me improve my technical understanding of the craft. I still make all my images the old-fashioned way - with 35mm slide film, usually Velvia 100,with no digital manipulation other than minor color correction after scanning (though I'm reluctantly considering a digital SLR to cut the expense and chemicals associated with processing).
